The Acer Travelmate Laptop RevealedThe Acer Travelmate laptop is Acer's basic laptop; in its current (late 2007) configuration, it has a 15.4" 1680 by 1050 resolution display with excellent color responsiveness and speed. The days when laptops lacked the display horsepower for gaming are long gone. The Acer Travelmate laptop collection of features is designed for a casual notebook user. It runs about 15" by 12", and is a bit under 1.5" thick, making it a fairly portable machine, but it's nowhere near being an ultraportable. One of the nice features of Acer Travelmate laptop, at least for those of us who've done enough typing that there's some repetitive stress injury, is the very slightly curved keyboard, which puts the wrists at a more natural, and ergonomic angle. The TravelMate has finally gotten this added to the feature set, which is a welcome improvement. It also runs the full gamut of adapter ports, like DVI (for powering an external digital monitor), four USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port, a very convenient "5-in-1" acard reader that handles SD, Memory Stick, MMC and xD Flash Memory. It's also got the usual "legacy" connectors, like Svideo Out, Type II PC Cards and more. Overall, design wise, the Acer Travelmate laptop case is durable, and high capacity. The performance specs on the guts of the machine aren't top of the line, but this isn't Acer's top of the line notebook. It's using an older processor, and usually comes with the minimum RAM needed to run things acceptably. It is more than adequate for most basic computing tasks – word processing, spreadsheets, internet surfing, and email. It might have some problems as a multimedia machine for games, but should play back most DVDs flawlessly.
