Why a laptop cooler is useful and what should you buy.
What is a laptop cooler? What should you look for? What can you expect and how much should they cost? These are important questions that we answer in our review and buying guide.
This summer I purchased a brand new Black Ferrari, with black interior. I dreamed about it for weeks while I considered all the options available: color, tires, radio and everything else imaginable.
When I brought it home someone asked: Are you going to park this beauty out here in the hot sun all day long, unprotected? That is when I suddenly realized that I needed a new apartment: one that had a covered garage to keep my new beauty cool.
Laptops, just like desktops, produce a significant amount of heat. This is why a laptop cooler pad is a great way to get the most out of your laptop and extend its life.
Many laptops are designed without proper airflow in mind, thus running consistently hot. Even though most laptops use slower and smaller processors than desktops, they still generate significant heat.
Laptops have built-in fans, however these fans are typically at the bottom of the laptop, thus making them somewhat ineffective when resting on any surface. If you often rest the laptop on your lap you too will suffer from this heat. This is where a laptop cooler comes in.
Overheating of your laptop can cause unanticipated reboots or shut-downs, programs that lock or hang, and even the heart-stopping blue screen.
When these things are happening your laptop is being damaged thus eventually reducing its life. Fans are added to the laptops to keep them cool. If proper airflow is not taking place, the laptop components will overhead and will eventually fail.
A laptop cooler pad can protect your valuable investment and reduce heat-related instability and potential damage. In our opinion it is a necessary accessory that will extend the life of your laptop.
They provide multiple benefits to your laptop: it protects it from overheating damage, and keeps the CPU cool and working at optimum speed, thus extending the life of your Laptop.
The cooler requires a USB plug to plug it in, so make sure that your Laptop has an USB Port (it will most likely have one unless you purchased an old laptop).
If your Laptop only has one USB Port then you will need to either purchase a USB Hub or purchase a Laptop Cooler that has a built in USB Hub, or at a minimum a pass-through USB Connector. Some Laptop Coolers have a built in 4 Port USB 2.0 Hub.
Typical features of a Laptop Cooler:
• Reduce heat-related instability • USB-powered (draw power from USB port) • No batteries or power adapters needed • Typically 2 or 3 ball-bearing fans for reliability • Whisper quiet, typically 25.9 dB(A) • Typically made of plastic/aluminum
Some have rubber pads near the back, which raise the pad and also give a convenient inclination to the laptop. This is beneficial when working on a flat surface, however they do not perform well when laptop is on your lap.
Before you purchase one we recommend you review your overall requirements and how you use your Laptop.
Well, to finish my story about my new car, it actually was almost new (only 20 years old) and it was not a Ferrari but rather a Chevy Capri. Well, we can all dream.
But you know what, it was still well worth the investment in a new apartment to keep my new baby cool.
